Speaking Part 1: Task

Para esta tarea de Speaking Part 1 – Presentation:

  • Tiempo de preparación (Think): aprox. 40 segundos.

  • Tiempo de speaking (Speak): 1 minuto para hablar sobre el tema.

Talk about a person in your family you admire.

You should say:

  • who this person is

  • what this person is like

  • why you admire this person.

Speaking Part 1: Sample Answer

One person in my family that I really admire is my grandmother. [Introduce the person] She is in her seventies, but she is very active and positive. [Use contrast: but] She always gets up early, goes for a walk and then prepares lunch for the whole family. [Use present simple for habits] She is very patient and she listens carefully when someone has a problem. [Add personality details]

I admire her because she has had a difficult life, but she never complains. [Give a reason with because] She worked hard to support her children and she still helps us whenever we need something. [Use past + still for now] She also gives me good advice about school and friends. [Add one extra example] For these reasons, my grandmother is the person I admire most in my family. [Finish with a clear conclusion]

Speaking Part 2.1: Task

Tiempo:

  • Listening: ~1 minuto

  • Speaking: 40 seconds

Task
You hear part of a tutorial with a teacher. Summarise the four main points for a classmate who can’t attend.

Audio: Okay everyone, I’d like to explain how to prepare your history presentation for next week. First, by Monday you need to choose a topic from the list on the course website and email it to me so I can approve it. Second, you should work in pairs and divide the work: one student focuses on research and the other on designing the slides. Remember to use at least two books and one online source. Third, your presentation should last between five and seven minutes and include no more than ten slides with clear headings and pictures, not too much text. Finally, you must upload your slides to the virtual campus the day before you present, so I can check them and solve any technical problems. If you have questions, come to my office hour on Thursday.

Speaking Part 2.1: Sample Answer

In today’s tutorial, the teacher explained how to prepare our history presentation for next week. [Give context first]

First, we must choose a topic from the list on the course website and email it to her by Monday, so she can approve it or suggest changes. [Point 1 + deadline]

Second, we have to work in pairs and share the work: one student does more research and the other designs the slides, but both should read the material and use at least two books and one online source. [Point 2 – teamwork + sources]

Third, the presentation should last about five to seven minutes and include a maximum of ten slides, with clear headings, simple bullet points and some pictures instead of long texts. [Point 3 – timing & slide design]

Finally, we need to upload the slides to the virtual campus the day before we present, so the teacher can check everything and help us if there is a technical problem. [Point 4 + clear ending]

Speaking Part 2.2: Task

Time

  • Think: 20 seconds

  • Speaking: 3 × 20 seconds (one answer per question)

Task
Your classmate goes on to ask your opinion about preparing class presentations.
They will ask you questions about:

  • choosing a topic

  • working with a partner

  • speaking in front of the class

Speaking Part 2.2: Sample Answer

Question 1 – Choosing a topic

How do you usually choose a topic for a school presentation?

Sample answer (B1.2):
I usually choose a topic that I already know a little about and that I find interesting. [Say your general idea] This helps me feel more confident, because it’s easier to read more and explain it in my own words. [Give a reason] For example, in history I often pick topics connected with wars or famous leaders, because I have seen documentaries about them. [Add a short example]

Question 2 – Working with a partner

Do you prefer working alone or with a partner for presentations? Why?

Sample answer (B1.2):
I prefer working with a partner for presentations. [Clear opinion] We can divide the work, so one person focuses on research and the other on the slides, like the teacher suggested. [Reason linked to the audio] Also, if I forget something during the presentation, my partner can help me and I feel less nervous. [Second reason / mini-example]

Question 3 – Speaking in front of the class

What advice would you give to a student who is nervous about speaking in front of the class?

Sample answer (B1.2):
My main advice is to practise the presentation several times at home. [Direct piece of advice] When you repeat it, you remember the key points and you don’t need to read the slides all the time. [Reason] I would also tell them to speak slowly, look at a few friendly faces in the class and breathe deeply before they start. [Extra practical tips + nice ending]

Speaking Part 3: Sample Answer

Hi Alex, thanks for your message. [Friendly opening] You said you want experience at a music festival, but you also need free time in the evenings to study and you don’t have much money, so cheap travel and meals included are important. [Resume los requisitos primero]

About City Beats, the festival in the capital, I don’t think it’s a good option for you. [Empieza descartando una opción] The flights may be low-cost, but you also need a two-hour train, so the trip could be expensive. You work from ten in the morning until ten at night and they only give you lunch, so you won’t have time or energy to study. [Conecta horas de trabajo con tus requisitos]

Green Valley Fest looks much better. [Presenta tu opción favorita] There is a cheap direct bus from your city, and you work from eight to four, only five days a week. That means you have the evenings free for your exams. They also give you lunch and dinner, so you save money on food, and you get a free weekend pass for you and a friend. [Explica por qué encaja bien]

Coast Sound Festival has a hotel and even a small payment, but the flight is expensive and you finish work at eight in the evening, so again you don’t have much time to study. [Menciona la tercera opción pero muestra el problema principal]

So, I recommend you choose Green Valley Fest. [Conclusión clara] It matches your budget, gives you good experience and still lets you study in the evenings.

Speaking Part 4: Task

Time

  • Think: 40 seconds

  • Speak: 90 seconds

Task

Online learning will soon replace most traditional classroom teaching.

You should:

  • discuss reasons for and against this idea

  • say what your own opinion is and justify it with reasons

Speaking Part 4: Sample Answer

I’m going to talk about whether online learning will replace normal classroom teaching. [Introduce the topic clearly]
Firstly, online courses are very convenient. Students can study from home and they don’t need to travel, which saves time and money. [Pro 1 + explanation] Moreover, technology now allows live video lessons, so learners can ask questions and work in groups, almost like in a real class. [Pro 2 + linking word]

However, there are also important disadvantages. [Move to the “against” side] Many students find it hard to concentrate at home and may feel lonely, because they don’t see their classmates face to face. [Con 1 + example] On the other hand, in a traditional classroom the teacher can notice immediately if someone is confused and can help them straight away. [Con 2 + contrast linker]

Overall, I think online learning will become more and more common, but it is unlikely to completely replace classroom teaching. [Evaluation] In my view, the best solution is a combination: some lessons online for flexibility, and some in person for social contact and better support. [Clear final conclusion]
